Wildlife officials have said a "monster" alligator killed in Florida falls short of the state record. A photograph of the dead reptile went viral after it was posted on Facebook by the owner of a hunting farm in Okeechobee. Lee Lightsey told local media he and hunting guide, Blake Godwin, spotted the alligator in one of the farm's cattle ponds at the weekend. They believed the gator was killing livestock on the property and Mr Lightsey shot it on 2 April. Mr Godwin said it was the largest alligator ever killed on the hunting farm, estimating it at nearly 15ft (4.5m ) and more than 800 pounds (363kg). But a spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) told Reuters on Wednesday the gator weighed 780 pounds and was short of the state record for length. U.S. authorities said Wednesday that they discovered a cross-border tunnel that ran a half-mile from a Tijuana house equipped with a large elevator to a lot in San Diego that was advertised as a wooden pallet business, resulting in seizures of more than a ton of cocaine and seven tons of marijuana. It was the 13th sophisticated secret passage found along California's border with Mexico since 2006, including three on the same short street in San Diego that runs parallel to a border fence with a densely populated residential area on the Mexican side. The unusually narrow tunnel was only about three feet wide, equipped with a rail system, lighting and ventilation. The tunnel was unusual because it was used for cocaine, not just marijuana, said Laura Duffy, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of California. A TEENAGER who livestreamed the rape of her 17-year-old friend has had her defence of broadcasting the assault online shut down by a prosecutor. Marina Lonina, 18, appeared in an Ohio court on Friday alongside accused rapist Raymond Gates. The pair pleaded not guilty on Friday to multiple charges including rape, kidnapping, sexual battery and pandering sexually-oriented matter involving a minor. Lonina pleaded not guilty to the additional charge of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material or performance, related to the alleged use of the social media livestreaming app Periscope. The high school student’s lawyer said she was initially trying to record the assault as evidence, but a prosecutor said she “got caught up on the likes”. A WOMAN lost in an Arizona forest for nine days survived by drinking pond water, eating plants and spelling out “help” on the ground with sticks, authorities said. The sign helped lead rescuers to Ann Rodgers, 72, in the White Mountains of eastern Arizona earlier this month, the state Department of Public Safety said. Rodgers told a Tucson TV station that she had food and water in her car but ran out after several days and turned to survival mode. “I was eating desert plants. My dog was too, diving into clovers and finding all the places that were the easiest to go,” she told  KOLD . Rodgers went missing March 31 as she headed to visit her grandkids in Phoenix. A majority of Americans believe self-defense is the main reason most people purchase a gun,  a new Rasmussen Reports poll reveals . The telephone survey of 1,000 adults across the country found: 66 percent believe self-defense is why people purchase firearms 5 percent believe it's to commit a criminal act 1 percent believe it's for job-related purposes 22 percent say it's for "some other reason." The poll also found law-abiding Americans are buying guns at a record pace, with nearly one-out-of-four Americans, 23 percent, say they or someone in their immediate family has bought a gun in the past year. The Justice Department says more than 8,000 violent fugitives were arrested during a six-week operation. Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates and the U.S. Marshals Service announced the results Wednesday of an initiative known as Operation Violent Reduction 12. Yates called the effort "targeted and focused" and said it focused on a dozen communities across the country that have high rates of violent crime. Officials say the marshals targeted people with open warrants for violent crimes such as murder, armed robbery and aggravated assault. Among those arrested were 559 fugitives wanted for homicide, 648 gang members and 946 sex offenders.
