According to Bernhard Goetz: Suspected rapist deserved to die

ON the front page of a New York City newspaper on January 2, 1985, Bernhard Goetz proclaimed “I’m sorry, but it had to be done”.
The bold headline referred to an incident in Lower Manhattan 11 days earlier when Goetz was travelling on a train. The New York local was approached by four men who allegedly tried to mug him.
Instead of handing over his wallet, Goetz pulled out a gun and fired off five shots, seriously wounding all four men. He handed himself in to police nine days later but escaped charges of attempted murder, assault and reckless endangerment.
He willingly became the face of vigilante justice, so it was no surprise he was happy to talk about a suspected rapist who was beaten to death this week.

Goetz, known these days as the “subway gunman”, was asked about the death of Earl Nash, a man with a lengthy arrest record who forced his way in to a Manhattan apartment.
Nash allegedly tried to sexually assault the wife of Mamadou Diallo but when Diallo caught him in the act he cracked his skull with a crowbar.
“Too bad somebody didn’t kill the scumbag 10 years ago,” Goetz said in an email to the New York Daily News. “That would have made the world a little better place.”
Diallo’s wife told police she was attacked around 9.30pm on Monday night (11.30am Tuesday AEST). She said she was at home when she heard a knock at the door and saw a man she did not recognise.
Nash, 43, then allegedly forced his way into the home, hit the woman with a chair and told her: “I don’t want money, I’m going to rape you,” according to the New York Post.
Diallo was parking his car when his wife escaped and called him on her mobile phone. Police say he ran into the building where he found Nash trying to escape. In the hallway on the sixth floor of the building, it’s alleged Diallo beat the other man to death. He has been charged with manslaughter.

A close friend told the Post the Guinea native worked as a taxi driver in the city for 20 years and was “a good guy”.
“He’s been in this country 27 years and never had a problem with anyone,” the friend said.
