Does this parrot know who killed its owner?

Image
A DEAD Michigan man’s parrot could turn his wife into a jailbird. Bud, a smart and vulgar African grey parrot, may know who shot and killed his owner Martin Duram last May in his Ensley home in the US, according to Mr Duram’s parents and local police. Weeks after Mr Duram has murdered, Bud began squawking “Don’t f**king shoot” — leading Mr Duram’s father, Charles, to believe those were his son’s last words. “I personally think he was there and he remembers it and he was saying it,” Charles told NBC affiliate WOOD-TV. His wife, Lillian, agrees. “That bird picks up on everything and anything and it’s got the filthiest mouth around,” she said. No one has been charged with Mr Duram’s murder, which police initially thought was a double-homicide when they found Mr Duram’s body riddled with five shots and his wife, Glenna, with a headshot wound. But Glenna ended up surviving — and now police are investigating whether she murdered her husband and then attempted to kill he...

According to Bernhard Goetz: Suspected rapist deserved to die

Image
ON the front page of a New York City newspaper on January 2, 1985, Bernhard Goetz proclaimed “I’m sorry, but it had to be done”. The bold headline referred to an incident in Lower Manhattan 11 days earlier when Goetz was travelling on a train. The New York local was approached by four men who allegedly tried to mug him. Instead of handing over his wallet, Goetz pulled out a gun and fired off five shots, seriously wounding all four men. He handed himself in to police nine days later but escaped charges of attempted murder, assault and reckless endangerment. He willingly became the face of vigilante justice, so it was no surprise he was happy to talk about a suspected rapist who was beaten to death this week. ‘Subway gunman’ Bernhard Goetz shot four men on a train in 1984. A former tycoon wanted on allegations of embezzlement and fraud in Taiwan has died in a car accident in California, the island's foreign ministry confirmed on Tuesday. 2,234 People infected with HIV by blood transfusion in India

Image
At least 2,234 Indians have contracted HIV while receiving blood transfusions in hospitals in the past 17 months alone, say officials. The information was revealed by the country's National Aids Control Organisation (Naco) in response to a petition filed by information activist Chetan Kothari. Mr Khothari told the BBC that he was "shocked" by the revelation. India has more than two million people living with HIV/Aids. The highest number of patients who had been infected with HIV as a result of contaminated blood in hospitals, were from the northern state of Uttar Pradesh with 361 cases, Mr Kothari's RTI (Right to Information) query revealed. The western states of Gujarat with 292 cases and Maharashtra with 276 cases rank second and third respectively. The Indian capital Delhi is at number four with 264 cases. "This is the official data, provided by the government-run Naco. I believe the real numbers would be double or triple that," Mr Kothar...

police find toddlers chained up ‘like dogs’ in pregnant mother's yard

Image
A PREGNANT mother has been charged after police found two injured toddlers chained up in her backyard and six other abused children inside the house. Porucha Phillips, 34, was arrested in San Antonio, Texas after concerned neighbours called cops about 11.45pm Thursday local time to report a crying child. Police discovered a three-year-old girl tied to a door with a dog leash and her two-year-old brother tied to the ground with a metal chain around his ankle. “I would describe it as disgusting,” Bexar County District Attorney Nicholas LaHood said of the scene. “It shocks your conscience when you think what kind of individual could treat children, who in my opinion are gifts from God, like this.” Bexar County Sheriff’s Office spokesman James Keith said the restraints were “the same kind of setup you would use for a dog.” Eight abused children were found at this San Antonio, Texas home. Scientists discover three new planets similar to Earth

Image
SCIENTISTS have discovered a trio of Earth-like planets that are the best bet so far for finding life outside our solar system. The three orbit an ultracool dwarf star a mere 39 light years away, and are likely comparable in size and temperature to Earth and Venus, they reported in a study, published in  Nature . “This is the first opportunity to find chemical traces of life outside our solar system,” said lead author Michael Gillon, an astrophysicist at the University of Liege in Belgium. All three planets had the “winning combination” of being similar in size to Earth, “potentially habitable” and close enough so their atmospheres can be analysed with current technology, he told  AFP . Star gazers will need to use the Hubble telescope to gather more information on the new planets. Picture: Supplied. Source: News Limited The find opens up a whole new “hunting ground” for habitable planets, he added. Gallon and colleagues calibrated a 60-centimetre tele...
