Shock as two-year-old girl buried alive by playmates

Image
Mulwanda Village residents in Navakholo Sub-County converse in low tones near a sugarcane farm on Friday after learning of the death of a two-year-old girl after she was buried alive by her playmates. PHOTO | BENSON AMADALA | NATION MEDIA GROUP.  A village in Kakamega County is in shock after a two-year-old girl was buried alive in a shallow grave by her three playmates. The children involved in the bizarre incident at Mulwanda Village are aged five, six and seven years. They are reported to have dug up a hole at the back of a house and filled it with water before performing the mock burial of the little girl. She suffocated after being pushed into the hole, which was covered with soil. The children later retrieved the body and dumped it next to a banana farm. The girl’s mother had left her daughter in the care of her grandmother in the village. A relative of the girl noticed she was missing and started searching the compound. De-Bosched! Who cares if a painting isn't by a famous artist after all?

Image
Art  museums like to present their best treasure in an authoritative way. Clearly printed labels on paintings tell you the artist’s name and when he or she lived, as well as the likely date of the work. But how reliable is that information? And if the facts change, do labels change too? The Prado has a problem. The  Bosch Research and Conservation Project , whose findings underpin  the great exhibition  of this Netherlandish visionary now at the Noordbrabants Museum in Den Bosch, has declared two of the paintings in the Spanish museum’s unrivalled collection of Hieronymus Bosch not his pure handiwork after all.  The Cure of Folly  is now merely “Workshop or follower of Hieronymus Bosch (c1510-20)”, say researchers, while The Temptation of Saint Anthony has been relegated to “Follower of Hieronymus Bosch (c1530-40 and after 1574)”. This is how they are labelled in the exhibition catalogue. Madrid is none too pleased. The Prado has reneged on its offer...

Dozens of Dutch mosques sent threatening letters featuring Nazi emblems

Image
A number of mosques in the Netherlands have been sent threatening letters featuring a swastika and the eagle emblem of Nazi Germany. The letter warns the recipients they can expect important visitors. ‘Pigs,’ the text states. ‘Islam is the false and devil’s religion.’ Dozens of mosques across the country have received the letter, from Utrecht to Nijmegen and Rotterdam. Labour MP Ahmed Marcouch has asked ministers to make a statement about efforts to catch the senders and to make sure mosques are given sufficient protection if it proves necessary. The letters arrived on the day the Netherlands commemorated 75 years since the World War II February strike against the deportation of Jews.  viw the full image here Read more at DutchNews.nl: Dozens of Dutch mosques sent threatening letters featuring Nazi emblems  Sources:  http://www.dutchnews.nl/news/archives/2016/02/dozens-of-dutch-mosques-sent-threatening-letters-featuring-nazi-emblems/ https://twitter.com/ahmedmarcou...

Crocodiles found guarding drug money in Amsterdam

Image
Synthetic drug traffickers in Amsterdam have been using large crocodiles to guard their money, according to a police report on Friday. The beasts were found when police conducted raids on six houses in Amsterdam and one in Almere. The raids netted several kilos of synthetic drugs, including €500,000 worth of crystal meth, €300,000 in cash, and several  firearms. In total nine men and two women ranging in age from 25 to 55 were taken into custody. Most of the cash was in a room in one house guarded by the two crocodiles which would-be thieves would have to pass to get to the money. The owner of the crocodiles was following the law, a police spokesperson told Nu.nl and had the appropriate permits for the animals. The animals are not being moved and someone is periodically visiting to feed them, the Telegraaf says. Big in America While the use of exotic animals to guard drug money may seem like something from a Hollywood thriller, dangerous reptiles have become popular among drug de...

Groningen wins worst Dutch university slogan vote

Image
Groningen University’s slogan ‘Born leaders reach for infinity’ has been voted most stupid university catch phrase in the country in an online poll. The poll was organised by a website set up by academics and students with the aim of improving higher education in the Netherlands. Amsterdam University’s ‘We are U’ was second on the list, followed by Leiden’s Excelleren in Vrijheid (excel in freedom). More than 3,200 people took part in the vote. Think Bold In the meantime, according to the Parool, Groningen has a new slogan ‘Think Bold’ which as several people have already pointed out, is not correct English. The platform which organised the competition says the use of slogans shows how ‘pointless advertising’ and branding is helping turn universities into economic units. ‘They are based on a vision of a university as a company that needs to be placed in the market, and that leads to money-wasting competition between them,’ the organisation said. The website team is now investigating ...

We may never catch the Cologne sex attackers, police chief admits

Image
Most of those responsible for the Cologne sex attacks may never be brought to justice, the city’s police chief has said. Jürgen Mathies told the BBC he “could not exclude” the possibility that most of the perpetrators  will never be caught. The admission came as an asylum-seeker became the first person to be convicted in connection with the events of New Year’s Eve. But the Moroccan man, who has not been named under German privacy laws, was charged with theft rather than sexual assault. Jürgen Mathies attending the Carnival in Cologne   Photo: Alamy "The CCTV footage is not good enough to clearly identify sexual assaults. We can see some thefts but that's all,” Mr Mathies, who took over as police chief in the wake of the attacks, said. “We are relying on witness accounts and victims identifying their attackers.” Of the 14 suspects arrested so far, only one has been charged with sexual assault.  The rest are being held on suspicion of theft. Donald Trump bragged he could have slept with Princess Diana

Image
WHEN it comes to sexist insults, US presidential hopeful Donald Trump doesn’t hold back. From his ex-wife Marla Maples (“Nice tits, no brains”) to US  news anchor Megyn Kelly  (“There was blood coming out of her wherever”), the billionaire businessman unleashes on women who don’t give him what he wants. Now old interviews have resurfaced in which the father-of-five branded Princess Diana “crazy” — but claimed he still would have had sex with her. Months after Diana died in a car crash in 1997,  Trump told US shock jock Howard Stern  he believed the royal was “supermodel beautiful”, adding she “had the height, she had magnificent skin.” “Why do people think it’s egotistical of you to say you could’ve gotten with Lady Di?” Stern asked. “You could’ve gotten her, right? You could’ve nailed her?” The Republican responded: “I think I could have.” Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump has a reputation for making atrociously sexist comments. Pi...
