The hunt for a 32-year-old woman who escaped from the Embu GK prison on Thursday continued on Friday, with the search team visiting a village in Kirinyaga County.
Ms Caroline Wanjiru Munene is facing a charge of stealing a gun from an Administration Police officer in Itabua, Embu County.
She is said to have escaped from the prison after mingling with other inmates going to a farm and fled into a nearby thicket.
Officers manning the facility found her prison garb near the fence.
The inmate wears a special prison uniform with the letters “SW” (Special Watch) prominently inscribed on it.
She was serving a six-month jail term for failing to attend a court hearing to answer to charges of stealing a Ceska pistol from a police officer attached to the Itabua Police Station.
CHARGED WITH THEFT
Ms Munene had allegedly spent a night at the AP officer’s home at the Itabua Police Station’s staff quarters in June last year, before she sneaked out with the weapon.
The gun was later recovered in a hotel in Majengo, in Embu Town, with 20 bullets.
The police officer and the woman were arrested. The officer was disciplined internally while Ms Munene was charged with theft and released on a Sh150,000 cash bail.
However, she skipped a court hearing, occasioning the Embu Magistrate’s Court to order her to forfeit the bail money and be jailed for six months for contempt of court.
UNSUCCESSFUL SEARCH
An officer at the Embu GK prison’s male section said prison officers and AP officers from Inoi, in Kirinyaga County, mounted an unsuccessful search Thursday night.
He described the woman, who hails from Ngurubani Town in neighbouring Kirinyaga County, as slim, of brown complexion and about 5’2 tall.
The officer said the woman was a loner who usually kept to herself and seldom got visitors except when visiting court for her case hearing.
