A customer carrying a concealed weapon at a Seattle-area 7-Eleven shot and killed a masked hatchet-wielding man who stormed into the store and started cutting people.

The attacker was identified as Steven Blacktongue, 43, who had spent time in prison for assault, said the Seattle Times. He reportedly entered the convenience store in Burien, about 10 miles south of Seattle, at about 5:45 a.m. Sunday and without saying a thing swung the hatchet at a customer before going behind the counter and attacking the clerk.

Within seconds of attacking the clerk Blacktongue was one the floor, shot by a customer who pulled out a handgun. He was pronounced dead at the scene, the Times said.
The store clerk suffered a minor injury in the attack, CNN reported.

The customer, a 60-year-old man with a license to carry a concealed weapon, was not injured. He was sitting drinking coffee, as he regularly does, when the attacker entered the store.

"Had this [customer] not shot, who knows what would've happened. We might have a dead clerk right now and instead we have a dead bad guy," said King County Sheriff’s Sgt. Cindi West, according to KIRO-TV. Charges aren't expected against the customer, who has been hailed as a hero.

The clerk, identified by KIRO-TV as Kuldeep Singh, said he thought the attacker was going to kill him.

The incident bolstered gun rights proponents on Twitter.
