most rape is consensual: Idaho sheriff opposes standardised, tracked rape-evidence kits ‘
HOSPITALS should not be provided with standardised forensic rape analysis kits because “the majority of our rapes ... are actually consensual sex”, says an Idaho sheriff.
Bingham County, Idaho, Sheriff Craig Rowland told a television news interview he was opposing a state government bill to centrally process, track and distribute rape evidence collection kits.
“The majority of our rapes — not to say that we don’t have rapes, we do — but the majority of our rapes that are called in are actually consensual sex,” the Sheriff said.
He was immediately met with a firestorm of opposition.
Idaho rape statistics reveal only 33 per cent of rape victims report the crime.
“It’s hard to know if a claim is false if the kits don’t get tested,” Ilse Knecht, of the advocacy group Joyful Heart Foundation, told AP. “Each one of these kits represents a survivor. ... We need to take their claim seriously, treat them with respect and use the evidence.”
Sheriff Rowland didn’t get his way.
The bill was passed unanimously, and has been forwarded to the State Governor for approval.
