Why young people want old men and women dead
Old is not gold anymore. The elderly are not at peace. They are a worried lot, especially at the Kenyan coast. Reason? Their children and grandchildren want to kill them. Take Mzee Samuel Katana, for instance. The a 64-year-old can’t help it, but shed tears.
“More than ten of my friends are no more. They have been killed, following accusations that they are sorcerers and practice witchcraft. There are very few old men left in my neighbourhood,” he says while sobbing like a little baby. Mzee Katana blames his step brothers who want to dethrone him as the custodian of his family’s property. He learnt later after fleeing that four of his step brothers had sold off part of the family land.
“But why kill me; just because of wealth?” he wonders. Mzee Katana is not alone. He is in the company of many others who share his predicament. The first round of similar reports from the coast grabbed news headlines in July 2013: Twenty elderly people killed every month over witchcraft allegations in Kilifi County. It read. The killing spree went on into 2014, to the point that a rescue centre named Kaya Godoma was created. Hundreds of elderly people, desperately attempting to dodge the grim reaper, flocked the centre seeking refuge.
